We're proud to be plastic-free and fully recyclable where there is a solution for skincare products. But this only works if you a) know what is recyclable, b) how can you recycle it, and c) if it's not yet a recyclable component, how can you keep it out of landfill?
Here, we unpick every HIGHBORN so you can be safe in the knowledge that your choice of skincare really can't get much better than this ... Plus we share some amazing tips from our customers on how to re-use and up-cycle almost all of your HIGHBORN empties!

Here, we unpick every HIGHBORN so you can be safe in the knowledge that your choice of skincare really can't get much better than this ... Plus we share some amazing tips from our customers on how to re-use and up-cycle almost all of your HIGHBORN empties!
We're really proud of our 'peanuts'! They're the hundreds of soft packaging pieces you'll find with every HIGHBORN delivery which probably make you gasp. But fear not - they quite simply absolutely HAVE to be 100% recyclable with no environmental impact (though they're handy to re-use in packages too!). And we're delighted to say they're ingeniously biodegradable!
If you don't have a use for these clever white nuggets you can:
Pop them in your household recycling bin.
Add them to your composting bin.
Pop them under water and watch them disappear before your eyes! (You have to try this...)
Yes they look fabulous and help your HIGHBORNs travel safely. But more importantly they're 100% recyclable! Though we do often hear from customers that they're too nice to throw away and handy for storing all sorts of bits and bobs.
Made from recycled cardboard with no coating for a lovely, natural matt feel. You can simply pop them into your home recycling bin.
If you are parting with your lovely box so it can starts its journey to its next use, we recommend you flatten the box to save on space and help maximise the storage available in your local refuse truck on their collection rounds.
We've made a conscious decision to move all our jars and bottles to glass where possible. Not only because these are very exquisite creams and need a befitting home, but also for recycling benefits too.
Pop your empties after cleaning into your glass collection box or local glass collection centre. Please do remove the labels where possible by soaking in hot water for a few minutes.
That said, our stunning glass jars also make for fantastic storage solutions too! Buttons, sweeties, spices, re-usable make-up remover pads... you name it!
And we have to thank Ambassador Rachael for sharing her top tip for using her jars for tea lights and keeping her empty 15ml eye gel jars to syphon other products into for travelling!
PUMPS AND PIPETTES: As with all skincare and cosmetic products around the world, these are sadly not currently recyclable though we continue to look for solutions. We will be the first to get there! Please search locally for services that collect pumps and pipettes as they can often be used to help with fundraising and more community benefits - even art sculptures at the local college!
We're worked really hard to create our lids with the 'best' recyclable sturdy plastic. That's no mean feat given they have to be strong and air tight to keep your HIGHBORNs fresh and secure! But we did it.
Depending on the local recycling rules in your area, you can pop your cleaned lids into your household recycling bin (not in with the glass items), though some areas you may need to take to your local refuse centre.
The lids do also make fantastic mixing bases for paints and water-based glues for pre-schools, schools etc. We often hear of plenty of other uses for crafting within the community!
We've worked tirelessly to remove as many plastics as we possibly can. And the plastic bottles that remain we're glad to say can be recycled in you household bin or your local recycling centre (varies by location - please do check locally).
Please do remove the labels - this can be made easier by soaking in hot water.
The lids however are not yet fully recyclable. Please do find a local lid collection service to support the re-use or disposal of your lids rather than your household waste.
The HIGHBORNS: Natural Impact Shampoo and Conditioner, Natural Make-Up Remover, Organic Hydration Gel.
Mascaras as a whole are one of the biggest cosmetic waste items so we simply had to find a sustainable solution! The main tube itself is 100% aluminium and can be popped into your household recycling bin. Please do clean first with warm soapy water using the brush wand.
Now, mascara brush wands are a different kettle of fish due to the variety of materials in one piece. We continue to search high and low for a 100% recyclable solution but whilst one does not exist there are some amazing ways you can up-cycle your wands! Some of our favourites:
Wildlife rescue centres can use cleaned mascara brushes for grooming small animals, cleaning syringes, and examining fur and feathers for injuries.
Eyebrow Brush: Simply clean your wand with warm soapy water and voila!
Lip Exfoliator: With a little Superior Lip Butter, gently brush over your lips to bring them up super soft and plump.
Flyaway Fixer: Perfect for securing those pesky 'fizzy' hair bits. Apply a little hair spray to help keep in place.
Cleaning Brush: They really are handy for getting into hard to reach places. Give it a go around your taps and even de-griming a plug hole!
And there are more! You see, there really is no need to bin!
So there you have it! You can continue to enjoy your HIGHBORNs knowing that they are the most sustainable they can be right now - and you may even find you're helping to support your local wildlife or budding artist if you choose to up-cycle!
Enjoy!
